A lone Whooper Swan on a grey January day in Norfolk As for the ducks – I’m now up to 15 species. I really enjoyed seeing these birds, as though I have watched them in their native North America, where they are abundant, that was a long time ago. Frustratingly, there were just too distant to photograph.

The Green-winged Teal ( Anas crecca carolinensis ) is North America’s smallest dabbling duck and taken by hunters second only to the Mallard. Luckily for them, even though they nest on the ground, they usually breed far from human habitation, under heavy vegetative cover. Click on photos for full sized images.

Here are a couple of my best photos of a male Common Yellowthroat , found across North America, and a male Black-polled Yellowthroat. And indeed they had; we saw 7 wild duck species, where usually there are none. Females are much more similar, but their songs are still easy to tell apart.
