Birding Dongfang and Dongzhai on Hainan

10,000 Birds

Dongfang is a smallish coastal city on the west coast of Hainan – with one or two main roads, some massive and apparently empty apartment blocks right next to the beach – and some strange swampy area pretty close to the main road. I guess the red bill is the bird’s equivalent of wearing Playboy branded clothes.

Wood Warbler Names Done Right

10,000 Birds

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. Most of the warblers south of the border escaped this ignominy; those Basileuterus and Myiothlypis species generally appear exactly as advertised. NAMED FOR PEOPLE. NAMED FOR PLACES.

10,000 Birds

The Pundit is a 2016 Syrah from Tenet Wines , a collaborative brand between Ste. I can’t say whether one of these species is more prone to punditry than the other. The Pundit is aged in blends of French and American oak for thirteen months, emerging a dark, almost inky, blood red that flashes garnet in the right light.

Birding Singapore

10,000 Birds

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer. “Odd, me?”

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of January 2012?

10,000 Birds

Nice, right? What else is nice is the prospect of seeing brand new birds in beautiful habitat. I, on the other hand, will be lollygagging with the usual Western New York winter species. When you’re done, come back and we’ll talk birds. Lucky you if you’re there too!
