Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. So, writing a post about them is easy.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

First published in 1973 in association with the Asa Wright Center, the book focuses on species descriptions, with illustrations grouped together in plates positioned in the center of the book. The AOU has not accepted that split.

I don’t want some researcher a hundred years from now wondering if my single-observer White-winged Dove in Queens was real so I had to add a photo.

Personally, I wish the species the best of luck in this endeavor. (Of Then again, why would anyone name a bird after a botanist, let alone one I only just made up right now? In the right light, the male Common Pheasant can look ridiculously attractive. for a sample of more than 800 species ( source ).

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition: A Field Guide Review

(To be fair, I could and should have also grabbed The Shorebird Guide for the Greenshank and Collin’s Bird Guide, 2nd edition for both birds, but the Nat Geo was right there next to me, where your favorite field guides should be.). Most of the species are described in the Species Accounts, arranged taxonomically into 86 family chapters.
