The Chinese Blackbird is among the most common birds in our compound. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. The Olive-backed Pipit is a small songbird that in Shanghai can only be seen in winter – in summer, it breeds further north. The juveniles look spottier and are mostly brown.

Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall. Gull-billed Terns breed in south San Diego Bay, along with Black Skimmers and several other tern species. We have a little bit of everything here. Good gulling in winter.

Ferruginous Hawks breed in the grasslands of eastern Montana, but they are rare in the mountains and in winter, so this bird was certainly a surprise. It sat serenely while we scrambled to set up scopes and get our looks, and only took off as we did so ourselves. It was truly a fantastic bird-of-prey day.

Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. 118 Eurasian (Chinese) Blackbird. 133 Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Considering how infrequently mergansers are seen in Hong Kong, the excitement was understandable and infectious. 9 Little Grebe. 4 or more seen both at Mai Po and in Starling Inlet. 10 Great Crested Grebe.

There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. What could be plainer than the Eurasian Tree Sparrow ? When juvenile Chinese Blackbirds want to get an alcoholic drink at a bar, they usually blacken their yellow gape flanges in order to look older. Not going for the obvious either. Sometimes it works.
