Birding Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana

Louisiana is known for a lot of things. It’s that coastline, however, that called me to Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge, an oasis drawing migrating waterfowl like a magnet. Early February brought a brisk wind to the region, and we mostly birded from the car as we drove a slow loop around the shallow wetland.

The Whistling Ducks of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

On a sandbar in the center of the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, hundreds of ducks swirled around each other or lay down to take cover against the punishing wind. February had brought zipping breezes and cloudy skies to this part of coastal Texas, but the birds didn’t seem to mind. Have time along the Texas-Louisiana coast?
