A straight shot to my bird feeder. My yard is a birding hotspot. The feeder dangles from a clothesline between two pine trees, beckoning a range of bird varieties. Hours slowly ticked by, but I had seemingly infinite opportunities to watch my birds while stilling leftover restless energy with knitting.

It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! First, wildlife officials in Louisiana announced the first successful wild Whooping Crane nest in that state since 1939. Little was known about oiled bird care at that time and despite the courageous attempts of hundreds of volunteers, only 300 birds survived from the 7,000 collected. Hardly the elegant, natural picture deserving of some seriously stunning birds! And what I found made me take a step back in time and reflect upon how truly special these birds are. In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock.
