Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, offers several great birding spots and here are some recommendations for areas to go birding in and around the city, how to get there by public transport, and some of the bird species you might expect to see. It is home to almost a hundred bird species, including woodpeckers and songbirds.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. Of course, I was going – birding, so the view of the fog (certainly not through the fog) has drawn several comments which I will not share here with you… While the Lada 4×4 is bumping along the dirt track (road??) Large birds flying through silver fog… buzzards? A way to beat the cold? No, they are Common Ravens. I hate fog.

Back in July, my fellow 10,000 Birds contributor Dragan wrote a delightful piece about birding Lake Kerkini in spring. I first visited Kerkini and this bird-rich region of northern Greece 15 years ago, and have been returning regularly ever since. My photograph below is of a captive bird).

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. Third of all, the bird that was first seen on 30 October is, as of this blog posting, STILL THERE!

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. When I arrived in the morning, there were many birds and no people. Like many of the top NWRs for birding , much of Conboy Lake NWR was obtained with funds from the sale of the Federal Duck Stamp : 94.5%
