It is home to almost a hundred bird species, including woodpeckers and songbirds. Kosutnjak Park , a former royal deer-hunting forest, is located to the west of the Topcider Park. The park is home to the Middle Spotted , Lesser Spotted , Grey-headed , Eurasian Green and Black Woodpeckers.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. A Kerkini mini-tiger Disappointingly, mammal encounters are few, other than the odd Roe Deer. I’ve only found one once, but it was a delightfully confiding bird.

Young Roe Deer buck in Beljarica. It is a spacious floodplain between the River Danube and the levee, 2.1 mi at its widest point and some 9 km2 / 3.5 And a decade ago, the League for Ornithological Action (LOA), a local NGO, won a grant to study the Danube Backwaters in Belgrade and produce a protection proposal.

Should I stay or should I go: Roe Deer A Common Buzzard in the ground, another on the top of a bush… Buzzards were the most obvious birds, most of them coming from the more northerly countries to overwinter here. A way to beat the cold?

while herbivores are represented by Chital and Sambar (above) deer, Wild Boar , Nilgai antelope, etc. Disinterested Gray Langurs await us in the next tree crown; one Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker is searching the branches, while one gorgeous Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher flies by. “Yes, we did – so what? We’re here for the birds!”
