Shanghai parks are rather crowded and noisy places, but the goshawks – who unlike me have lived in China all their lives – apparently do not mind. When not watched by people thinking of the chick as cute, it eats birds though. Coming from somebody who has exiled himself to China, this is not exactly a compliment.

The Latin species name of the Marsh Sandpiper is stagnatilis , which somehow I thought might hint at the thin, needle-sharp bill of the bird (I do not know how I got this idea, maybe the word stagnatilis sounds kind of sharp) but in reality, stagnatilis means “of or belonging to pools or ponds” (HBW).

Our actual first bird for Queensland was a Common Myna at the airport and we were surprised that they did not seem as prolific as in Sydney. The bird got very nervous when I approached, trying to strike me with its beak through the net. Herons and egrets are easily the most visible birds at Nanhui, particularly in summer. And indeed, if you only see a single Little Egret posing on a tree in the early morning, the bird can look quite majestic.
