Spotting My Florida Birds on their Maine Breeding Grounds

10,000 Birds

During a chilly Florida day (yes, we have those) a few months ago, I drove thirty minutes outside of Tallahassee to a co-worker’s house for the singular purpose of checking out her bird feeders. Purple Finches abounded in Florida this winter and spring, popping up at bird feeders around the state. The birds connect us!

Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus

10,000 Birds

Any day of birding in New York State that includes a sighting of a Vesper Sparrow is a better-then-average day. The precipitous plunge of Vesper Sparrow populations has been largely because of changing land use practices. What has caused the decline? They really stick out when you see them with other little brown jobs.
