In this part (sorry Corey) all those tundran breeders seem to have followed the path most flown. The concrete ramp collects seaweed as the tide pushes back and forth. The seaweed, in its turn attracts insects and thus birds. The faint scalloping on the back suggests that it is a young bird.

One or or two of these cute birds visited me every day throughout the winter. Fortunately, my own garden is currently being visited by a nice collection of resident species.

Birding at the Tip of Florida: A Bit of Everything

It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here. A cool climate on one side and wide expanses of water on the others creates isolation as many temperate land bird species seem unable to colonize areas south of Lake Okeechobee.

Anna’s, Rufous and Calliope: Hummingbirds of the West

She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. Here you can see the female collecting nesting material. She will begin breeding in April.
