A pair of Beach Stone-curlews

We are very lucky that we regularly observe this pair of birds on the Northern end of Cable Beach. There are some dense mangrove bushes there and they can shelter from the heat in the shade. There are not many bird species that you can almost guarantee to be in a pair on Valentine’s Day.

Brown birds near Broome

As you all know, “brown” can be quite good on a bird and it comes in all colours and sizes! One of the best places to find “brown” around Broome is on the highway as you head south as there is wide open country and plenty of fences for birds to perch on. Here we discovered a beautiful bird.

Pink-eared Ducks-a favourite duck

For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. The Pink-eared Duck is very nomadic and there can be hundreds of these birds at a particular location one day and all gone the next.

Tawny Frogmouth family

This is a remote part of Australia and distances can soon be covered, though on this journey north on 29th January we did encounter eleven sections of the main highway that had gone under water at creeks between Broome and Fitzroy Crossing. It is lovely to see such beautiful birds in such a lush green environment at this time of year.
