There was the usual dawn chorus of Bendires and Crissal Thrashers , “Lilian’s” Eastern Meadowlarks , and Black-throated Sparrows in the grasslands below Portal. Sweetwater Wetlands Park in Tucson, Arizona

When we first landed here in Tucson, Arizona, fate worked her magic, and one of the first people I met was Luke Safford. Luke is a coordinator with the Tucson Audubon Society, and was incredibly helpful with getting my feet on the ground, as far as South East Arizona Birding. After removing the legs, swallowed the bug whole.

The Little Bird Year: Week 41 – Madera Canyon, Tucson Arizona

Tucson Arizona is turning out to be a very birdy area. I got to see my first ever Arizona Woodpecker here as well. I was hoping to see the Rufous-crowned Sparrow , and the Black-tailed Gnatcatcher. The Rufous-crowned Sparrow never did materialize, but wow, what a day, and what a place. eBird Submissions – 377.

It’s a well-known fact that southeast Arizona in summer is awesome. My first birding trip ever was to Arizona. It was time to drive south and up, to the Sky Islands of southeast Arizona. Why Tucson, for the birds of course!

Now that Jeanne and I have settled here in Tucson, Arizona, we have been questioned by our friends dozens of times….Why 10 countries, over 1300 bird species, and now I have limited my various twitches to just one county, Pima, which pretty much surrounds the greater Tucson Arizona. Why Tucson? Do you realize it gets really hot there?

In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state.
