The Maroon-tailed Parakeet lives in northern South America. In Ecuador it is found mostly in the tropical and sub-tropical forest of the east and west slopes. The place of this Bird Love action is the Sumaco National Bioreserve located on the east slope of the Ecuador in the legendary Loreto Road.

Moreover, Colombia remains the best destination to see many species that are very tough to find elsewhere in South America. Whilst a few of these tanager species migrate to North America, most species are sedentary and many of them have very fragmented and small ranges. But we just could not ignore the plentiful antpitta species too.

This spectacular, turkey-like bird roams the floor of tropical forests from eastern Mexico south to northwestern Ecuador. The Crimson-rumped Toucanets ( Aulacorhynchus haematopygus ) I was privileged to observe at Refugio Paz de Las Aves in Ecuador were absolute cripplers, as the parlance goes. Actually, the toucanets I’ve may be even better than the toucans, since some of them have offered better views. Is this a beautiful bird or what?

Formerly considered a parula, it turns out to be the sister species of the Crescent-chested Warbler , a high elevation species of Middle America with a similar song. Another bird with an intriguing name and yes, it looks just as super cool! Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager. Blue-and-Gold Tanager. It is regular at more than one site in Costa Rica.

When Esdras asked us to find the bird without his help, I flashed back to my first potoo experience on the Napo River, Ecuador, where I was literally face-to-face with a Common Potoo and still saw a stick.
