The lush pastures of the Aripo Livestock Station sustained herds of happy Buffalypso , a special breed of T&T beef cattle named for their Water Buffalo heritage and Calypso-happy country. Last but not least were not one but TWO new species of blackbird for me, both Yellow-hooded and Red-breasted ! In fact, it was.

A Pinnated Bittern gets escorted to another hiding place by a squadron of Yellow-hooded Blackbirds. Many of these were still in their breeding plumage, a special treat for us here in the tropics as they would soon shed their richly patterned exterior for a drab and more mundane outfit. One of the more interesting aspects (in my opinion) of breeding in birds is their mating strategy. In polygyny, females will often nest on territories held by a male, with multiple females nesting on a single male’s territory, as in Red-winged Blackbirds (Yasukawa and Searcy 1995). of all bird species, is polyandry.

So, winter is very nearly upon us, and no, I never did find a Yellow-headed Blackbird. In most of North America, winter is finch time. The Gray-crowned Rosy Finch , when she abandons her breeding grounds, prefers to forage on the ground, similar to (and sometimes in company with) Snow Buntings, Horned Larks , and Longspurs.

There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. When juvenile Chinese Blackbirds want to get an alcoholic drink at a bar, they usually blacken their yellow gape flanges in order to look older. Similarly, the Yellow-rumped Flycatcher is the White-browed Flycatcher in Chinese. Not going for the obvious either.
