Car trouble shut down my big birding plans this weekend, but my local birds kept me entertained. My most interesting sighting involved a Sharp-shinned Hawk stalking and possibly taking a bird in a neighbor’s yard. Corey enjoyed a great weekend that included plenty of birding on Saturday morning. September has drawn to a close, but the birding excitement may just be getting started, depending on where you live. They must have chased the birds away! Normally, the Dickcissel that Corey found while watching morning flight at Fort Tilden would easily be his Best Bird of the Weekend, especially as he saw two on Saturday morning.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend would have been the Yellow-billed Cuckoo that popped up in front of him at Kissena Corridor Park on Saturday morning but a rarity in Brooklyn takes the cake instead. It was an incredibly easy twitch with the only downer being the bird’s tendency to stay deep in the reeds. How about you?

The fact that this hour falls in the middle of the night means that most people sleep right through it, but I wonder what would happen if you observes a nocturnal bird like an owl during the hour that gets reset. I found myself in a beautiful part of New York that was so remote that birds apparently couldn’t find it.

I will, of course, get over my weather woes and find a way to enjoy the unappreciated pleasures of winter birding. Because I hid out from the cold this weekend as much as possible, my birding was mainly done from my window. There are lots of nice ducks but none are as sexy as Redheads , Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend.

Corey saw quite a few birds this weekend including his first Clay-colored Sparrow of the year at Kissena Park and a surprise Blue Grosbeak while leading a walk for New York City Audubon. But his Best Bird of the Weekend was the brightest male Cape May Warbler he had ever seen in fall, one that was not at all a “confusing fall warbler.”

Corey had a wonderful weekend of birding, hitting a variety of spots across Queens on Saturday and then leading a New York City Audubon field trip looking for ducks in central Queens on Sunday.
