At the end of May in 2015 I wrote about the area too and there were huge numbers of birds there then. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies. Ducks at Munkajarra Wetland. Every visit varies, which is why it is such a great place to visit.

The 2015 Queens County Bird Club Big Sit at Fort Tilden on Saturday was a rousing success! In addition to having more participants, we had more bird species, 76, beating out last year’s inaugural effort by two whole species. The hawk flight was not large but we did see quite a few species of raptors.

However, some birds still stand out from the rest, and they tend to be the rare ones like these species: Arctic Tern : Unexpected, seen very close on land and in flight, and a lifer that I should have got at some point when living and birding up north. These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared). But the same species was never found again. I think the people running the place even fed them.

The only bird-related activity I can think of is looking at bird photos I took in Singapore in 2015, and adding some irrelevant comments to them. The host species (meaning those unlucky birds that have to drive koel chicks to school and go to their parents’ meetings) include House Crow … … and Common Myna ( source ). .

Consider these numbers recorded by long-time local birder Harry Robinson: 1,230 common nighthawks (the highest recorded count for Florida) on September 11th, 2002; 1,560 swallow-tailed kites on July 26th, 2006 and 1,660 black-bellied whistling ducks on February 5th, 2010. Additionally, 367 bird species have been recorded.

Decades later, Richard Pough’s Audubon Bird Guide, Eastern Land Birds (I happily own the 1948 edition) included nest and egg descriptions for each species as well. The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Fairy Martins were busy nesting under the bridge and the water body and surrounds were home to Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Australasian Grebe, Australasian Darter, Plumed Whistling-Ducks, White-faced Herons and Great Egret to name a few species. Speaking of my balcony, I vastly exceeded my goal of seeing 65 species from it in 2014, clocking 81 species this year. That increased my total list from my balcony to 92 species! Further from my balcony I managed to see 257 species in my home county of Queens in 2014, a pretty decent number.

There was a large island in the centre of the lake that was a roost site to many species of birds. The majority of the ducks that I observed that day were Chestnut Teal , but Pacific Black Ducks were also present. A Latham’s Snipe was present this week and that would be a nice bird to get onto my 2015 year list !

Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. I had just a split-second glimpse of this species – my only second ever – yet immediately knew what is it, but I was driving through a snowbound countryside and had another car behind me, therefore I stopped a good 50 metres later to eBird it. I’ve only seen this handsome, copper-headed duck once before, years ago – being in Montana didn’t help on that front – and from all accounts this bird was showing well. My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. This means that loons are no longer first!

The London Wetlands Centre was converted and is managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, founded by the famous duck and swan enthusiast Peter Scott.
