Red-billed Curassow ( Crax blumenbachii ), a large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the same family as the more familiar Plain Chachalaca of southern Texas, was never a very widespread species. In 2013, Dalcio Dacol and I paid a visit to this reserve as part of an independent, month long birding trip in southeast Brazil.

Long overdue, the first confirmed state record of Elegant Tern * was found on 3 July 2013 by a trio of birders on the mudflats at Cupsogue Beach County Park as the tide was getting very high. It is a bird of the Pacific coast of North and South America, breeding in western Mexico and southern California.

There are a few spots where entering the heronry is allowed and the birds breeding in that section seem to be habituated to the visits. Off we sail to another breeding colony – that of threatened Dalmatian Pelicans. I haven’t said that we are inside a national park and these visits are strictly regulated.

Of the native breeding species, 112 are endemic or “very nearly endemic.” (Can of Texas Press in 2013 (I haven’t examined either title).

Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.
