For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. It is a species we have not seen in flight dispersing to a new location, but they often fly up and back down rather vocally if disturbed.

Also known as the Scaly-breasted Munia , Spice Finch , or, more properly, as Lonchura punctulata , Nutmeg Mannikins have been present in California for decades, with counts in the hundreds not terribly unusual in southern California. A young or female Nutmeg Mannikin can be a confusing bird to identify for the unprepared observer.

The Comb-crested Jacana Irediparra gallinacean is present in some of the ephemeral lakes around Broome in wet years, but can be absent for several years and then reappear. A typical distant photograph was taken in May 2011 at an ephemeral lake near Broome. Thankfully the red crest is very helpful in identifying this species.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. Since its rediscovery in 1997, this species has been found at a number of new locations, several of which appear to hold significant populations.

On May 2nd we bush walked to an ephemeral lake approximately 55 kilometres/34 miles from Broome with my Mum, who also enjoys birds and walking, to find more ducks present than on our previous visit a couple of weeks ago. Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.
