In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. My number one choice at the time was Egyptian Goose ( Alopochen aegyptiacus ), an adaptable sheldgoose from Africa that was rapidly becoming established in peninsular Florida.

I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen. How can I narrow down the eight-hundred-sixty-three species to ten?

This is a short account of what happened one fine Monday around noon, March 21st of 2011, while I was at work. They mostly winter in Africa just south of the Sahara and in southern Asia (from India to southern China), and there is – very curiously – an isolated resident population in southern Africa.

This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. Because this was such a common species, we lacked quantitative data to be certain that this lack was an actual “situation” and not just the ordinary seasonal variation.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. Rather, it originates from the white-hot evil fire that is the soul of an invasive, alien species hell-bent on destruction and mayhem.

Frigatebirds (Fregatidae) Five species of frigatebird ply the planet’s tropical skies and seas. Ringer Cormorants and Shags (Phalacrocoracidae) Cormorants are more speciose than other families in the order; 30-40 species range widely on every continent and many islands. With the aid of solar panel and a battery a 5 gram tag can be fitted to a bird and the information gained will enable the researchers to follow the species as it makes its journey through remote areas. Once again these tiny 5 gram satellite tags were deployed and since 2011 they have tracked the incredible journeys of several Cuckoos.

In southern Africa, there are two species. The Spotted Thick-knee , Burhinus capensis is, is found across much of Africa, favouring open country and is perfectly suited to the dry sandy ground of the cape region, where this individual would almost certainly have been overlooked were it not for its bright yellow legs, eyes and bill.

Where did the Coney Island Gray-hooded Gull come from, Africa or South America? In this book, rare birds are species “for which, on average, only 5 or fewer individuals have been found annually in North America since around 1950.” Rare Birds of North America covers 265 species within these parameters. And, not very often.

This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck.

There is a Linnet at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, and though I bird this park regularly, the Linnet, a bird regularly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa and also named in a sweet song by Stephen Sondheim (Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeny Todd) has eluded me. I needed a book showing a Linnet. A miscellaneous pot indeed!
