First Outbreak of Usutu Virus in Germany

A few dead birds were collected by authorities and sent to a laboratory for investigation. The first detection outside Africa occurred in Vienna/Austria between 2001 and 2006. It subsequently spread to Budapest/ Hungary (2005, 2006), Zürich/ Switzerland (2006), and north-east Italy (2008/2009).

Madagascar’s Lost and Found

However numerous expeditions failed to produce any evidence of the bird and in 2006 the IUCN reclassified Madagascar Pochard as “possibly extinct”. The first two are officially classified as “Extinct” and the latter is a newly described species based on two juvenile specimens collected in 1931 and is currently classified as “Data Deficient”.

The publishers start the field guide with a strongly worded warning, the authors are a bit more lenient but warn to only eat mushrooms collected and identified with a professional. Identification of all mushroom species entails proper collection, detailed in the Introduction. Both these guides are illustrated with photographs.)

In the all too brief introduction to the book, they state, “This book aims to shed light on the family lives of birds, a topic that has captured our collective imagination and enriched our language despite being shrouded in mystery.”. Both authors marvel at the diversity of birding reproductive and parenting behavior. Peregrine Falcon nests.

Hawks In Flight, Second edition: A Review of a New Version of a Birding Classic
