Red-tailed Hawk Hunting a Gray Squirrel

On a walk around Baisley Pond Park’s eponymous pond in Queens recently I heard a Gray Squirrel chittering away angrily at something. Tired of White-throated Sparrows and American Robins , I decided to stroll over and see what the squirrel was so upset about. But the hawk would not give the squirrel long to rest.

Close to Home

Let’s see if you agree: I liked some of the photos as much for their backgrounds as for the bird itself, such as this Lincoln Sparrow foraging among duckweed, algae, Ficus fruits, and Jacaranda flowers. Most of our winter New World sparrows seem to have already headed north. But our resident Chipping Sparrows never leave.

Common Hedgerow Birds of Costa Rica

For this reason, it offers both highland species, such as the Black-headed Siskin and White-throated Thrush , and lowland species, like the Squirrel Cuckoo and Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher. So was this Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow. The Rusty Sparrow can be seen in much of Mexico and Central America. Black-headed Siskin.
