We found this little Red-cheeked Woodpecker family surviving on a dead tree near the road to Canande. Red-cheeked Woodpecker We crossed the Canande River on a ferry that is controlled by Botrosa (written permit by Jocotoco or Botrosa is required to board the ferry) with the purpose of limiting access to the forests ahead.

In the first full day, we have seen dozens each of giraffes, zebra, warthogs, elephants, 12 rhinos, 30 hippos, 3 Cape Buffalo, crocodiles, jackals, monkeys, baboons, literally a thousand impala, and at least 10 different antelope type animals. The very first bird I saw when we entered Kruger was this Burchell’s Coucal.

There are also wild boars and macaque monkeys and you are advised to not rustle plastic bags, because they associate the noise with food. There are plenty of lookouts and shelters, but there is no drinking water available at the toilet facilities, so you need to carry plenty of water.

Abyssinian Woodpecker This small, golden-backed woodpecker can be very elusive, it was photographed in juniper woodland on the slopes of the Bale Mountains, but this woodpecker can also be seen at Wondo Genet and even in Addis Ababa. This image was taken from a hotel roof in Lalibela, thus allowing eye-level views!

On our first morning, we actually ended up with over 90 species in a couple of hours right around the rooms of the hotel, best ones being Green Ibis (common at the hotel ponds), Bat Falcon , Cinnamon and Rufous-winged Woodpeckers , Fasciated Antshrike , Plain-colored Tanager , Crimson-collared Tanager , and Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher.

Game was not plentiful but the highlight was finding a beautiful female Leopard with her cub next to the road, and along the Mago River, a Da Brazza’s Monkey gorging himself on figs. A long bearded D’Brazza’s Monkey was gorging on figs along the Mago River. We spotted a young Leopard and his mother in Mago National Park. Mursi woman.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. I would dearly love to see an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and I think our Carrie deserves to observe a Great Auk.

Lots of great birds in this pine-spruce bog habitat: Purple Finches , Least Flycatchers , many wood-warblers, but no sign of my jinx bird (other life bird possibilities for me here included Great Gray Owl , Spruce Grouse , Northern Three-toed Woodpecker and American Black-backed Woodpecker ). For balance I used my tripod and scope.

The aptly named Fire-bellied Woodpecker drummed above our heads and a Blue Cuckooshrike sang out the loudest as its beautiful song echoed around the forest. Truly fantastic. Of course this is just a single morning in a very small part of Ghana and there is so much more to see!

More interesting was a troop of Spider Monkeys that ranged through the canopy of old growth trees, around eight total that shook the branches with swings on long grasping arms and tails. More forest species were seen in the hotel gardens including Cinnamon and Rufous-winged Woodpeckers , tanagers, and other species.

My personal favorites are the images that show the relationships that are at the heart of this book–a Linneated Woodpecker perched opposite a bromeliad on an exposed tree, Azteca ants on a cecropia tree whose decaying parts provide food, and, a little distressingly, two Capuchin Monkeys feeding on a Toucan (thanks to James Adams).

Ruby-crowned Tanager and Fawn-breasted Tanager can be seen here and recently a Blonde-crested Woodpecker has taken up residence and seems to like this area. Look out for the Howler Monkeys too. Most of these are very common birds which are widely distributed throughout Brazil. Lucky visitors may even spot a Tapir.

The house we were staying in was surrounded by Howler Monkeys all night, who really work as a great 5:30 alarm, if that happens to be the time you want to get up! It is not the smallest woodpecker in the world, that honor goes to the Barred Piculet , at 8CM, but this one is pretty darn close.

The birds here may be hard but are worthwhile, highlights for me were Orange-backed Woodpeckers , a Bornean Green Magpie , Crimson-headed Partridges and a tiny Bornean Stubtail. This site can be done as a day trip from the coastal resorts at a pinch, but can be combined with some of the other local attractions. Tabunan Rafflesia Centre.
