Finally my colleague Doty worked her magic in Michigan, and we let him go there. I held him a minute so he could look around, then I slowly opened my hands and after a few seconds he flew off and went right to a tree trunk and started acting like a wild woodpecker. We laugh because we are pretty darn sure he beat us back into Ohio.

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice.

I will never forget seeing a flock of around 1,000 birds in Michigan, especially as it took me two decades to come up with a total of two observations (at a single bird each, both females) of its European/central Asian counterpart. Wicked, right? They’re lovely birds, and they didn’t ask to come here, after all.

So, it was a real surprise to find that Right Brain Brewery of Traverse City, Michigan, makes an amber ale named Northern Hawk Owl. Right Brain’s Northern Hawk Owl Amber Ale straddles this malty and hoppy divide quite adeptly, just as the bird it’s named for embodies both owl- and hawk-traits. Good birding and happy drinking!

As the Newsweek story indicates, 38 states have passed laws giving women the right to breastfeed in any public or private place she’d otherwise be allowed to be. One effective way of doing that is to boycott businesses that interfere with a woman's right to breastfeed her child. The legislators in these 12 states ought to be ashamed.
