Barn Owl on a dry tree trunk and a… traffic jam!

Springtime Tree Cutting and Wildlife

Volunteer Moya Kinnealy reached in nearly to her elbow and removed four tiny Red-bellied Woodpeckers. After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. Imagine the nocturnal owls trying to sleep… ‘I told you we shouldn’t have moved near those woodpeckers!’

Kerkini in Winter

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. I’ve only found one once, but it was a delightfully confiding bird.

Casa Tangara dowii, Costa Rica: to claim our feathery gold

Back at Casa dowii, that evening we tried playback on the resident Bare-shanked Screech-Owl , but got no response. Like most of the lodge, this bathroom has a glass wall, this one overlooking the feeders and my lifer mammal, my first opossum ever. more than two dozen species before the rain forced us inside.

Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal.
