I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead. I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead.

Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. The two dogs walk right next to our rover and disappear in the dark. A few dozen shots later, I stop and reach for binoculars – I want to observe and enjoy them. They raise their trunks, sniffing the air. Sniffing us.

The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely. I watched the bird for a full fifteen minutes as it foraged, chased a Lesser Goldfinch off its branch, was chased off a branch in turn by an Acorn Woodpecker , and chipped its now familiar chip the entire time. The gorgeous colors of Myioborus pictus shining through despite the poor viewing conditions.
