Towards the end of a beautiful day in Boston’s Mount Auburn Cemetery, I was investigating some Blue Jay alarms and suddenly found myself face to face with an Eastern Screech Owl. I moved slowly back and kept up a soothing mumble to reassure the owl that I was not a threat, then found a shady spot from which to watch.

Urban Birding in San Diego

Recently, there has been a Burrowing Owl hanging around that is easy to spot amongst the riprap near the river mouth. Digiscoped Burrowing Owl San Elijo Lagoon is a county park north of San Diego and is one of the region’s largest wetlands. A few rain showers passed which caused us to run for the nature center and cover.

Apart from the crane, some Long-eared Owls were the highlight of this short trip for me. Ideally, however, you should either find somebody else to pay for these toys or at least convince your wife that these toys are not toys but highly useful. I recently watched an online advertisement for The Economist.

Who’s watching whom?

I’m not a great imitator of birdcalls, but Pygmy-Owls (both Mountain and Ferruginous ) are easy to imitate, and can draw in all sorts of birds — not just the owls themselves. In this case, the bird that came to investigate was a lovely male Berylline Hummingbird. His reaction was most unusual.

You could say that migration is covered by almost any birding book; I learned a lot about radio transmitters from Jonathan Slaght’s Owls of the Eastern Ice (2020) and Alexander Lees and James Gilroy’s Vagrancy in Birds (2022) is almost a textbook on migration theory (especially magnetic fields, not covered in Flight Paths ).

Power Companies and Springtime Tree Removal

But there are ways to prevent this situation, and to prevent the constant springtime problem of wildlife being orphaned… like these Barred Owls , above left, and Red-Shouldered Hawks , all of whom were delivered as eggs to Christine’s Critters in Weston, CT, thanks to two different private homeowners’ felling of trees.
