Did you see that Change.org now has an Animal Welfare page? is clearly someone who advocates for animal rights. Ernst believes we don't have a right to use sentient nonhumans and all of her posts (and those of Alex Melonas, who also posts at animalrights.change.org) are unequivocal about animal use.

They had a page with quotes from animal rights activists, but as I was reading, I noticed that they were very unfavorable quotes from such activists as Wayne Pacelle and Ingrid Newkirk. By the way, it's not only the name, but the web site is also designed to be deceiving with pictures of cute animals and strong human/animal relationships.

The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.) And, of course, this board would be dominated by big ag's people, so I think they're right. It's an issue to follow though.

I believe that we have to be inclusive in the animal rights movement and attack the system using all kinds of methods in all sorts of fields. At the same time, do we have the time to wait for everyone to become vegan to enact laws that will at least allow more humane care in the short term.

This standing and the rights associated with it must be enforceable against the government so that the public can hold it accountable. Interpretation of these rights must be adaptable to contemporary concerns, such as biodiversity and species extinction. All three are impaired when the basis of public debate is a myth.

One aspect of the question of whether animals have rights may now be treated. If animals have rights, then these are welfare rather than option-rights. The Argument from Animal Rights A stronger argument is made by people who maintain that animals have rights. In particular, it has been argued that animals have a right to life. The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. Go vegan, go vegetarian, go humane or just eat less meat. If we all decide to consider animals as precious as humans, the only logical place for us is back in the jungle.
