Would a rehabber release a bird into a city park if it had not been rescued from inside the city? The Portuguese believed that the owl was a portent for bad luck and despised them. Many rehabbers raise several crows together and release them on site. The crows are not friendly to humans, although they sometimes make an exception for the person who raised them. Jodi Swenson of Massachusett’s Cape Ann Wild Bird Rescue released a crow named Odin, who occasionally still appears at her open window.

That’s an old wives’ tale that says bird won’t take care of a baby bird with a human smell on it–not true at all. If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits.

A recent arrival at the Nairobi nursery was an elephant named Murka, rescued near Tsavo National Park with a spear lodged deep between her eyes and gaping spear and axe wounds along her back and sides. Just like humans, dogs depend on joints for flexibility and movement. Lately my beautiful, old greyhound Ruby, a rescued and abused track dog had experienced extreme agony in her joints from being overly raced around a dog track in the first few years of her life. They say dogs are like their owners and this is true, regarding joints.
