At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. A Suffolk Otter swimming in the Little Ouse river Not all Otter s want to be photographed But this one emerged, though only briefly The otter is, of course, a member of the weasel family. Why not the stoat family or the badger family?)

In addition to those birds and the Squirrel Cuckoo pictured above, the following are some of the more common hedgerow species of Costa Rica. Hoffmann’s Woodpecker. This beautiful woodpecker does very well in edge habitats and is the common, expected species in the Central Valley and dry areas of the Pacific slope.

Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family. I, an American birder, like squirrels and they must sense that because they never attack me. Squirrels are not cute when they are running around your home.

Add Common Tody-Flycatcher and several Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers and Brown-hooded Parrots to that picture, among many others. Should I add, the foliage in front of my casita (bungalow) window was regularly checked by White-collared Manakin. But I am talking birds only!

When it comes to a one stop shopping for food and shelter, no other plant is as widely used as the Cardon Cactus family. The Gila Woodpecker is the first to break the fruit open, gets it fill and moves on. First the Gila Woodpecker. A few minutes later, the Gila Woodpecker was back, and in a was very excited.

There were wild boars and monitors rustling through the leaves as well as the plantain squirrels that we had become so accustomed to. We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. However, I do have some photographs of the Banded Woodpecker ! Banded Woodpecker.

I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. This pair of Lineated Woodpeckers loves the termite-ridden branches of my neighbor’s avocado tree. Of course, various species of bats as well. I hope you choose our place!
