I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.

But, they still occur, the most common species being Black Vulture , Turkey Vulture , Gray Hawk , Short-tailed Hawk , and Yellow-headed and Crested Caracaras. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. An owl by day? Some members of this family always do well with people and Costa Rica is no exception. Yes and pretty common too! Blackbirds.

He is the author of an internationally distributed book in Spanish about family finances and has recorded four albums in Spanish of his own songs. But then I moved to Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, which has almost no opportunities to see interesting species (except for a good population of burrowing owls). But hey… Aztec Thrushes!

The noble Blue Tit once ranged from Iran through Turkey and Europe to the Canary Islands (the Spanish Islands off North Africa – the other bird was named for the islands incidentally) and North Africa. The Barn Owl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern).

Great Shearwater – At this point, seabirds are my weakest family in Queens with the most species having reported in the borough that I have not seen. 318 – Burrowing Owl , 16 May 2019: An unbelievable find and a thrilling chase, this bird at Big Egg Marsh was as as astonishing as it was unpredicted. No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! This former aberrant wood-warbler is so weird, it has been given its own family. Owls (because they merit target status everywhere). Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Wrenthrush. Scarlet Macaw.
