I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. For some reason my son is absolutely into fish, and the duck pond might hold ducks of various species and sorts and shapes and colours, and pink flamingos too. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish.

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. a baby bird of indeterminate species hatches while his mother is away from the nest. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. I was planning a trip to South Africa, I had about five days to fill, I wanted to get a bunch of desert species (particularly the Springbok – not a bird) in a way that wasn’t too hard to reach from Johannesburg. Lions are boring and should be avoided on safari, but I quite liked this one, even if he had ticks. Or Cheetahs.
