A paper reports on how a female Common Cuckoo was mobbed and killed by Oriental Reed Warbler hosts. While to my knowledge the Large Hawk-Cuckoo only migrates through Nanhui, the Common Cuckoo stays here in summer and looks for host species, particularly the Oriental Reed Warbler.

In addition to longtails and rats, Wingate battles developers (of course), a rare Snowy Owl that kills 5% of the cahow population (Wingate shoots the owl, to the dismay of many), and the U.S. Ultimately, the story always comes back to the cahows, whose population grows slowly. She uses both sources well.

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). Both are part of what one paper calls the Brown Hawk Owl complex – something that is much less objectionable than the military-industrial complex but (at least to me) not really a lot more interesting.

I was attending the 3rd Global Bird-watching Conference in Gujarat and suddenly surrounded not just be species that were completely new, but entire families of birds. Larry adds our second owl species to this list of stellar birds. It was a race between the Snowy Plover and the Spotted Owl. I chose the owl.

This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. I really only had one full day to bird, as I had some family obligations to fulfill, so I chose to see how much I could find at the Sydney Royal Botanical Garden. This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better politics: in 2007, poachers killed only 13 rhinos in South Africa, but in 2008 already 83, in 2009 – 122, in 2010 – 333, in 2011 – 448 and in 2012 a staggering 668!

Eastern Screech-Owl, 22 March, Alley Pond Park, Queens, New York. Before this year I had only ever encountered a single Eastern Screech-Owl in Queens and that was essentially a heard-only in the wee hours of the morning on a Christmas Bird Count. The lack of owls was a real bummer. What a cutie! A first state record? State bird!
