Close to 5% of turkeys being farmed in Minnesota have been or shortly will be destroyed , and the virus is also affecting chickens. There will be a Turkey for every table for the US Thanksgiving. Ostriches are infected as well as, in one known case, Falcons. People should avoid contact with sick/dead poultry or wildlife.

I was lucky enough to get off work early the other day and thought I would head out toward Battle Creek Wildlife Area and try to get some better photos of the Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk I’ve seen on Dersch Road. These Black-legged and Red-legged Kittiwakes only need to fear gulls and Peregrine Falcons , although bad weather and erosion do take their toll on nests. Look carefully and you can pick out some Least Auklets as well.

I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I also spent a bunch of time on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and, as usual, managed to see some birds on workdays. Anhinga ?
