So sure, taking photos is great, but I was most impressed by the possibility of video. You get across so much more about the life of the bird in video rather than in static photos. To have the power to make mini-documentaries literally in the palm of my hand is a heady experience. I imagined I would fill it up with music.

New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). If the FWC killed 35 tortoises on video, it would be on mainstream news. The man who owned the snakes, Chris Coffee, had legally possessed them for years.

The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. I was a bit sad, too, that we had annoyed the owl enough that it felt it had to strafe us … my normal MO is to avoid stressing out wildlife. You can see a video of some of that water-flinging behavior in this video.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding.
