Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Now, dont get me wrong, there have been some nice birds, and locations in between, but these two experiences are just so hard to put out of my mind. I gave up on visiting the cave, and just watched this bird washing, preening and then jumping right in, and catch this small flat fish. The show stopper was his Eagle-owl.

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls. Black-and-yellow Broadbill. A female Crested Fireback. And wine.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. During migration (mostly in March and November), several thousand birds’ strong flocks of Common Cranes land here, while during autumn and winter there are several Long-eared Owl roosts. 2 Baranda fish farm.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. My fiance and I drove nearly two hours to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in rural Indiana to watch them come in for the evening.

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
