On a single trip I have seen four species of turtle, which must be my all time high in one day. Unfortunately, I have not managed a decent photograph of a Snapping Turtle in New Jersey yet, so you will have to be happy with shots of only three of the species I have spotted. They are also easily my favorite species of turtle.

It’s an incredible experience to see these cotton balls on stilts as they hop out from the dense mountain forest underbrush and dance around in front of you. The list goes on and on and on. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly.

It brings mammals, and frogs in profusion, and reptiles, and insects. It was the perfect experience, the guide had astonishing eyes and found things we would have passed over if we had been alone. We found some more sleeping birds, lots of frogs, and a Lesser Mousedeer – a new species for me! Or nothing big at least.
