There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. A group of about 15 Least Sandpipers was feeding in the shallows. Hearts racing and tears of emotion welling up in our eyes! We then checked the Presa El Nogalito for one bird species in particular. What a spectacle.

Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. I ticked off 9 lifers.

This is what we need for birds, whose rights as government-protected species are violated every day by free-roaming cats. Thanks to groups like Alley Cat Allies, outdoor and feral cats have become above the law. They would be made up of people who are sick and tired of government-protected species being slaughtered by domestic cats.

Since it was the first link in this chain, Pino Real was where I met many of Michoacán’s flagship species. As I look back at my eBird species list, it is astonishing how many of my lifers were first seen there. To my shock, I had a wonderful outing, with 63 species seen in six hours. That chain continues to this day.
