Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

10,000 Birds

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. Their strange appearance and habit of communally nesting in rock overhangs and caves has given them their alternative name of rockfowl , and before that the rather charming ‘ Bald-headed Crow ‘ Further illustrating their unusual long-tailed, yet

Dog Ear Infections

4 The Love Of Animals

While dog ear infections are not generally a serious condition, they can turn into one pretty quick. They are also very uncomfortable for your dog, so it is important to identify them as soon as possible so you can begin treatment as soon as possible. There are many ways a dog can contract an ear infection. If your dog spends a lot of time in moist conditions such as swimming, he may be prone to getting an ear infection.

Beef Farm's Trucks Burned by Activists

Critter News

I don't support the destruction of property or any physical threats against people who harm animals whether through medical testing or through conventional agriculture. It does nothing but make the targets more wedded to their positions and it garners sympathy from the general public. And, this happened in Fresno County which is in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

Sometimes you get the bird…

10,000 Birds

I was going to continue talking about birding in Sydney today, but an incident on Friday needs to be addressed quickly, before the immediacy of the memory is gone. It concerns the nature of wildlife in Australia, and is perhaps the most remarked about aspect of Australia’s wildlife, at least the impression you’d get if you’ve ever watched ten minutes of Animal Planet.

White Penguin… Wow!

10,000 Birds

While people tend to consider penguins in terms of black and white, every once in a while one of these dapper divers drops the tuxedo for something along the lines of a summer seersucker… White Chinstrap Penguin © David Stephens, Lindblad Expeditions Used with permission Guests and expedition staff aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Explorer were treated to a rare sighting of this rare nearly all-white leucistic Chinstrap Penguin waddling its way through the Aitcho Islands in

The Birds of New Jersey: Status and Distribution – A Review by a Sometime Jersey Birder

10,000 Birds

It’s tough being a New Jersey birder. Jersey has always gotten a bad rap in general (the smells of the turnpike, the Jersey shore, the governor), and in the world of birding, the state often seems to be symbolized by two words: Cape May. And yes, Cape May is incredibly wonderful, with its hawk watch and its migrant birds funneling through in fall, but there are other wonderful places in which to bird in the state.

Goliath Herons at Lake Panic

10,000 Birds

The evocatively named Lake Panic is overlooked by a thatched, rustic style hide in one of the most delicious settings that a birder is ever likely to encounter. The bird life of Kruger National Park appears to be distilled into a small area surrounding the hide and they seem oblivious to the observers with their battery of lenses poking out from the wooden building.

Rain arrives in Roebuck Bay

10,000 Birds

It had to happen eventually! We have all been waiting for the rain to arrive and it seems to be later this Wet Season. The frogs must have been wondering what was going on, but now they are happy. It’s not “rain” here until we get over 10mm in a downpour, which has now officially happened and it looks like we have plenty more rain ahead.

Birders Ignoring Signs

10,000 Birds

One of the things that has vexed me about my fellow bird watchers is the inability to read signs. Well, that’s not fair. It’s the acute ability by many bird watchers to ignore signs. I’ve heard several excuses from, “It’s a great way for the land owner to get to know me,” to “no one is going to notice,” to “it’s a stupid rule,” or in the case of airports, “I’m doing them a service by being another set of eyes to watch

In defense of county listing

10,000 Birds

My name is Nate. And I keep county lists. I realize that this admission tars me as the most obsessive and compulsive among a community of obsessive-compulsives. I realize that listing is a reviled in birding culture as it is celebrated, and more listing even more so, but hear me out here. I mean to make the argument that county listing is birding at its most pure, the ultimate combination of the two warring angels that sit upon each one of our shoulders.

Barnacle Goose, Eastport, Long Island, New York

10,000 Birds

Originally found on Saturday, 7 January, by Peter Priolo, the Barnacle Goose in these pictures has been present on Eastport Lake in Eastport, New York, since, though it does fly out to feed in nearby fields from time to time. I *ahem* coincidentally happened to be in the area on the day after it was found and enjoyed decent scope views from the sidewalk on Main Street looking north into the lake.

It is only two weeks from today that I will be in sun-drenched and bird-rich Florida, reveling in potential life birds, frolicking with fellow birders, and having a grand old time. Why? Because I will be at the 15th Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival ! Having never birded Florida before I really can’t wait to see an Anhinga , a Florida Scrub-Jay , a Limpkin.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second Weekend of 2011)

10,000 Birds

Just two weekends into 2012, I already love this year. No doubt the weather has something to do with it; Rochester, NY may historically be one of the United States’ snowiest metropolitan areas, but we’ve been basking in almost vernal weather. Plus my New York Football Giants just advanced in the first round of the NFL playoffs. Sure, I’m likely omitting some other far more important factors involving family, friends, and professional success, but the little things mean a lot.

Vagrant Mountain Bluebirds Are Sticking Around

10,000 Birds

As of today, 8 January 2012, the Mountain Bluebirds in New York’s Suffolk County and Ontario’s Wellington County are both being seen. Both have stuck it out for awhile now and neither shows any signs of moving on, odd for birds that, from what I understand, tend to stick for a brief time when they are out of range. Anyone care to proffer an explanation?

Camille Marino of Wildwood, who founded the group Negotiation is Over, received the records last week.
