Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. The Lesser White-fronted Goose is not only rare in Serbia, but also overlooked among numerous Greater White-fronted Geese. This species’ population is suspected to have decreased rapidly, owing to levels of hunting on the staging and wintering grounds, and habitat deterioration (largely as a result of land cultivation).

American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. A small group of Canada Geese fly over, and out in front of their formation was a pair of Sandhill Cranes. It got to within about 15 yards, calmly hunting for breakfast as it came. This was a first!

The grassy areas were also patrolled by Laughing Kookaburras , which engaged in the typical watch and wait hunting methods of the kingfisher family, and the engaging Willie Wagtail. The other common duck species is the Hardhead , a local species of diving duck, but the rarest species (of which I saw only one) is the Musk Duck.

Of all the ducks in the world scaup are the worst. Scaup are so worthless that when you input “I love scaup” into Google you only get four results and three of them are hunting related. The other closest relation to scaup is the Tufted Duck which, if it were a scaup, would be by far the best scaup that there is.
