Escaped partridges, quail, and pheasants are never as abundant or harmful as the much-maligned big three invasives – Rock Pigeons , European Starlings , and House Sparrows. The same can’t really be said of a confusing Orange Bishop or gaudy Mandarin Duck loose in a city park.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Much like my visit to Malheur NWR, the actual wet Land areas are flooded once the cooperative farming is over. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks. Here is one of the Western Grebes.

There were, however, compensations, such as finding breeding Yellow Wagtails on a nearby farm where I’d never seen them before. There were plenty of birds on the water to keep me entertained, with close to 60 Greylag geese, 50 Canada Geese, 80 Wigeon, 250 Coots, plus a good assortment of Tufted Ducks, Gadwall, Shoveler and Mallard.

Wetland Halfway between bustling Belgrade and sleepy Zrenjanin, River Tamis floodzone contains abundant oxbow lakes (turned into fish farms) and salt marshes filled with birds. Fish farms in Baranda and neighbouring Sakule villages, about 40 km / half an hour north of Belgrade, offer likely the best wetland birding near the city.

Back in the truck, working on our back spasms, we drove a hundred yards south, then turned east, passing a farm house which had feeders out front, and where a flock of Bohemian Waxwings had been reported that same morning. We watched the empty sky for a few minutes, then realized the birds were gone for good.
