This rocky area high up beyond the beach sand offers great camouflage and protection. The photo below shows the actual nest with the eggs in, but that may not be initially clear to you, so I have underlined them in a copy of the photo below. They will do it for other threats as a distraction to protect their eggs or chicks.

My morning routine has already been simplified down to the essentials – roll out of bed and out from under the protective mosquito net, pull on dirty odorous field clothes, munch down a quick breakfast. She lays an egg every day or two until completing a clutch of anywhere from five to ten eggs.

When there are cuckoos around – which parasitize Daurian Redstarts – the females have a higher rate of egg rejection.

Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. They are early nesters, but I was unable to tell whether any pairs already had eggs, though I suspected that some might have done.

Black Kites breeding

The adult Pied Oystercatcher that is sitting on the eggs will lay as flat as possible to protect the eggs. Of course Black Kites also breed and at the moment there is a nest very close to the highway. Pied Oystercatchers at a nest site with Black Kites present.

Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. Understandably, after all the trouble of incubating the eggs. Of course, being mean, I only show you one of them. Little Egrets are busy bickering inside their nest. Meanwhile, Little Grebes are still in a slightly earlier phase.
