There are three species of crow-like cotingas with odd hairdos known as umbrellabirds, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird is the one that lives in Costa Rica. Ruffs from Israel, the one in Costa Rica kind of looked like the top bird. Emerald Tanager -one of several beautiful tanagers that live in Costa Rica.

Birdiness also takes place with the insane feeder action whereby Gray-headed Chachalacas hang out with Orange-chinned Parakeets , honeycreepers, tanagers, loads of bill snapping Clay-colored Thrushes , saltators, and so on, all right in your face.

It was new for my country list, is a rare migrant in Costa Rica, and we saw maybe one of the biggest flocks recorded in recent history at the shorebird hotspot of Chomes. This big old nightjar migrates through and winters in Costa Rica but finding one is always unexpected. 5 Chuck-wills-Widow. 6 Rufous-crested Coquette.

At least most of the resident species can still be seen right along the road, you just have to keep an eye out for cyclists and vehicles on their way up and down the volcano. Think Arizona meets Costa Rica with a Mexican twist. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot. The birds we observed were nesting right into the cliff face. There are not too many photos of Sinaloa Martin.
