Costa Rica is one of those places. One of my favorite birding shirts from Costa Rica, this was from a Christmas Count near Sam Ramon and yes, Speckled Tanagers were seen. Fortunately, they were able to extract themselves to eventually get the highest total for the day in Costa Rica, 230 plus species.

Think Arizona meets Costa Rica with a Mexican twist. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. There are many dusty side roads in this area, many of which offer productive birding.

While the jays did catch our attention by way of a smart crest and different shades of blue and gray punctuated by a black necklace and mascara, they were part of our common natural experience, their existence was taken for granted. These are the six species that occur in Costa Rica: Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii).

There are three species of crow-like cotingas with odd hairdos known as umbrellabirds, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird is the one that lives in Costa Rica. Ruffs from Israel, the one in Costa Rica kind of looked like the top bird. Emerald Tanager -one of several beautiful tanagers that live in Costa Rica.

Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). ’ They are challenging to find, frustrating to photograph, and the antbird experience often includes heat and humidity, mud and bugs. I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience.
