There's a stray dog problem in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico. There are about 70,000 stray dogs roaming San Luis Rio Colorado in northern Mexico. The solution? If you bring in the dog for euthanization, you get a tax exemption.hooray! Sarcasm there of course. Clearly, there's no spay/neuter program in this place.

Handing out T-shirts at the registration desk with a summer intern from the Field Museum (one of the conference’s sponsoring groups) gave me a good feel for who was around and what ornithologists are like. The first group to use him had great success, finding the bird in no time along with a Long-billed Curlew , another great bird for the southeast. I saw my first on the short grass prairie of Colorado, in the shadow of mountains. Now the only thing to do was to make the long drive down to the coast and see for myself.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

Trinidad Colorado is located just a few miles north of the Colorado – New Mexico border, and home to the Trinidad Reservoir. The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. I am a birder, after all.

Above is a photo of the only Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia ) seen at Tuscan Preserve back in February of 2010 when a group of concerned birders installed eight artificial burrows on this property, to be preserved in perpetuity. It is mid-March and I am back in Colorado for meetings. Large groups of Hooded Merganser , Redhead , Franklin’s Gull , and other floaters were easily spotted. The same Townsend’s Solitaire I dipped on last time in Colorado. Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura.

We had stopped at one of the massive over-looks near Roosevelt Lodge, when a small group of Pine Siskins flew all the way across the canyon, and landed in the tree above me. The location was super, and while there was nothing new, there was a nice group of birds. We are on our way to Colorado, and the famous Trinidad Lake area.

Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. However, a place like Colorado offers mild winters and there is usually open water scattered around the Front Range. Probably the most sought after merg in a Colorado winter is the Red-breasted Merganser.
