Humans, and the rats, pigs, goats, dogs, cats, snakes, mosquitos and disease they bring with them have wiped out species after species on islands. The common story on its demise was that it was wiped out by a single cat, a lighthouse keeper’s cat named Tibbles. Its demise at the hands of cats only took about a year.

It isn’t a very promising park, to be sure – it’s loaded with art, and everyone knows that birds hate art, or maybe they hate the feral cats that live under the art (probably the latter.) I gave the stink-eye to the obviously well-fed cats. People walk their dogs and do yoga there.

One pair have already returned to the nest site and will no doubt lay a further clutch of eggs in due course. The animal is most likely a feral cat along that stretch of beach, but we also can’t discount a feral fox having encountered a dead one close to Broome recently.

Of course, only thirty minutes later I saw my second roadrunner, this time standing on a lawn adjacent to a busy street! Car collisions, feral cats, and run-ins with hunters also cause problems, even for this speed-racer. It was large, almost two feet long with a tan look that matched the meadow grasses.

In a nationwide survey in 2005, the Australian public rated the common myna as the most significant pest, beating contenders such as the cane toad, the European rabbit, and feral cat ( source ). I received a call yesterday from a woman who started a coalition for homeless cats. She said her Trapper Man could go to the Project Treadstone site--last night and this morning--and trap up to 10 cats that she would bring to Pahokee. She has brought over a dozen cats there in just two weeks, 11 of whom were pregnant.

Nonnative species have huge impacts on wildlife species everywhere… mice kill seabird chicks in their burrows, rats eat endangered bird eggs, overpopulated deer clear the understory of forests, pigs root out native plants and terrestrial animals, cats kill anything they can get their paws on. The logic of this is ridiculous.

Rats arrived on ships and cats, foxes and rabbits were all introduced and they were all detrimental to the bird population. The huge population of feral cats undoubtedly is having a detrimental effect on our bird life. Since European settlement there has been the loss of at least 23 species and sub-species of birds.

I'd rather trap a feral cat and have her spayed. Or educate my neighbors about the alternatives to poker at the dog track (and of course, about dog racing). Maybe sugar processed with bone char isn't worth boycotting a restaurant over. Maybe it is. Arguing about that line with other vegans, though, doesn't interest me.

Eventually, of course, the wild turkeys in the entire Eastern region of the US were mostly or entirely wiped out, and it may well be that European stocks contributed to the reintroduction of Turkeys in the New World. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well.

They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. The first bustard/korhaan I saw was the endemic Southern Black Korhaan at West Cape NP (called Black Bustard in eBird). I am a birder, after all.
