Greater flamingoes winter in large numbers Kerkini’s wintering Flamingoes probably breed in Turkey Forty years ago Flamingoes were rare visitors to Greece: several thousand now winter on Kerkini Lake Kerkini is an artificial lake, its depth varying considerably throughout the year. It was photographed on the east embankment.

I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal.

Other important breeding species include Black and White Stork , Lesser Spotted , White-tailed , and Booted Eagle. Also Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans are resident species, breeding successfully on artificial platforms (close to 300 pairs). Next to them, Whiskered and Black Terns nest on floating leaves of White Water-lilies.

Also the digital guide dG, basically an 8x monocular with an additional camera lens, capable of recording your image and sending it to your phone for the Merlin app to ID a bird (or a mammal, and in the future, butterflies as well). At the end of the workshop we all went birding, to further test the glasses of our choice.

Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years.

According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. We will hopefully see the rare Black-backed Woodpecker ( Picoides arcticus ) as well. Many of those species also nest in the park. and maybe hear it drum!

When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. Desperate optimists have tried to wish every extinct species, from the plesiosaur to the Ivory-billed Woodpecker , its own little island of habitat where it survives. But the ferrets kept dying.
