Kerkini in Winter

10,000 Birds

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. A feature of the autumn is the abundance of Great White Egrets – up to 200 on the lake – but as far as I know they have yet to breed here. It was photographed on the east embankment.

In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal.

It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

10,000 Birds

Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. My OCD would not stand that!

Our Audubon Chapter Campout at Lassen Volcanic National Park

10,000 Birds

One of the best things about our annual Lassen Park campout is that we get to see several species of birds that are rarely, if ever, seen in the Sacramento Valley. Many of those species also nest in the park. One of my favorite species is the Water Ouzel , more commonly known now as the American Dipper ( Cinclus mexicanus ).

Photo: This area holds 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles , which represents the biggest density per square mile anywhere in the country. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. Photographed by Szekeres Levente. and one ad.).
