The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. In 1951, there were 18 breeding pairs of cahows discovered on three tiny islands. She uses both sources well.

The first impression you may get when you observe a Tawny Frogmouth is that it is some sort of Owl , because it can look similar. I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. 1) Dusky Eagle-Owl. I was attending the 3rd Global Bird-watching Conference in Gujarat and suddenly surrounded not just be species that were completely new, but entire families of birds.

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others.

Our next rarity was a Thick-billed Warbler , followed almost immediately by an Asian Barred Owlet , a bird I was very pleased with as a) I spotted it and b) I usually miss owls. Both are common, really common, and both are essentially indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. Next we drove to the local bird breeding centre.

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. To me, the term “raptor” includes owls.
