The Pantanal is a vast, seasonally flooded wetland — the largest in the world — in the southwest corner of the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil. The handsome White-fronted Woodpecker is at the northern edge of its range in the Pantanal. It is in this habitat in which most of the near-endemic Pantanal specialties occur.

Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!) Plate 97: Andean and partly Andean antshrikes, illustrated by Oscar Tintaya. Bolivia doesn’t come up much in discussions of birding travel.

Although 99% is privately owned, the Pantanal (swamp in Spanish) was my favorite place in Brazil. Although there are no endemic birds in this area of Brazil, there are soooo many birds (650 residents) and lots of them are restricted range birds. It is an eye opener which every birder must see before it its gone.
