Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Bird Day is a lovely, little jewel of a book. Hauber and artist Tony Angell fulfills this goal beautifully and was the factor that motivated me to review this book. The essays also touch on conservation, though less that the amount I would have assumed would be in a book that is part of an “Earth Day” series.

The Kirtland’s Warbler: The Story of a Bird’s Fight Against Extinction and the People Who Saved It: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

It’s the warbler that is often the last unchecked species on birders’ life lists and, whether you list or not, for most of us observing it is a once in a lifetime experience. In fact, my main criticism of The Kirtland’s Warbler is that we don’t hear enough about how the book itself was written. photo by Lynn C.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of July 2016)

10,000 Birds

As we put another July weekend in the book, so to speak, we should consider the difference between relative and absolute time. But if I have to pick a living bird, American Kestrels hunting along farm roads always work for me. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.

Charles Harper’s Birds & Words: A Review of a Classic Reborn

10,000 Birds

Charles Harper’s Birds & Word s is the signature book of this bird and nature artist’s career. Harper, a farm boy, had never heard of feeding stations and had also, apparently, never before taken a good hard look at birds. These are images that are hard to resist, even for birders enthralled with realism.

Things I didn’t know that I didn’t know about British bees

10,000 Birds

Birdie books will obviously take precedence, but a well written, lavishly illustrated guide is a thing of beauty whatever the discipline. A book mark was very useful to make the glossary quickly accessible. It is probably a safe bet that readers at 10,000 Birds relish field guides irrespective of their subject.
